Copywriter Info: What is a Copywriter?

Copywriters create persuasive non-fiction commonly known as "copy". If you need to convince an audience to accept an idea, buy a product or approve a plan, you either need a good writer or need to learn to write good copy.

Copywriting frequently gets confused with technical writing, which produces "how-to" non-fiction. If you want to persuade, you want us. If you want to inform, get a technical writer.

Many writers do both copy and technical writing, because informing readers is a wonderful method of persuasion. Just don't ask a one-genre writer to produce for the other genre, the results may not be pleasant.

To clear up another common mistake, we are not copyright law specialists, though many of us are quite familiar with those laws. We also tend to be familiar with contract and tort law for many of the same reasons. We are writers, after all!

Copywriting is gaining prominence in today's global community. Internet marketing requires good, rich content in order to catch and keep attention. Interesting, fun to read, highly informative, and naturally keyword rich Internet content gets ranked consistently high by search engines as well.

Copywriters come in such varieties as:

  • Short ad writers
  • Long ad writers
  • Direct mail writers
  • White paper writers
  • Web content writers
  • Grant writers
  • Business proposal writers
  • Speech writers
  • TV/Radio/Phone Script writers

. . and any other genre used to persuade people. Most copywriters will specialize in a few of these. For instance, I've done short ads, sales letters, lead generation kits, media kits, business proposals and web content. I've dabbled in grantwriting, but it's not really my niche. Don't ask me to write a TV ad script.

You can find a multitude of books, courses, and classes intended to teach business people to write persuasively. Considering that good copywriters don't come cheap, you may find learning to do it yourself more cost-effective.

Even if you take a copywriting course, you should then know when to hire a professional.

If you've only got room for a seven word ad and you can't create a unique "hook" that small, you're not going to interest anyone much less get them to buy your product. You just wasted a lot of money on your ad space.

Good copy justifies the investment. Find out how much copywriters charge before you decide.
